This past week, our talented visual designers took part in a friendly face off. Each designer chose a theme and completely owned it on our showroom floor. Check out the inspiring photos of each room design below, read our interviews and gather home decorating ideas for your own living space.

Lake House

Go unplugged and reconnect with nature in this enchanting lake house haven. Feel soft layers of rugs underfoot and surround yourself in a curtain of lush greenery that makes this seem like a private, lakeside dock.

Our designer, Dustin, created this charming retreat with lake-inspired elements like wooden oars, an Amish Outdoors balcony set and hanging candle lanterns. Use the arrows below to scroll through the Lake House gallery!

What was your inspiration for this display?

“With the cold weather wearing off I have been craving summer, so I wanted to create a summer oasis right here in the store, complete with trees and lush greens.”

How can I recreate this same look in my home?

“This look would be perfect for a porch or patio area. The furniture is durable, so it can be used outdoors or in a semi-protected area and will last for years to come.”

“The artificial foliage is perfect because you get the effect of plants but not the hassle or work! With this look, you can take it any direction you like. You can go country, minimal or have a lake feel. It’s very customizable to your own personal taste.”

What reaction do you want people to have toward your design?

“I love to create looks that almost literally invite you in. This look has done exactly that! Once you experience it in person, you will understand just how cozy it is. So far, everyone has the same reaction: “I wish I had a margarita right now!” Which is the best response I could have ever received!”

The American Dream

Embrace the American dream with this vintage display. The millions of travelers who came to Ellis Island in search of new life and a better future inspired our designer, Zach. He used trunks, suitcases and travel-inspired accents, like this luggage furniture.

A Statue of Liberty wall hanging represents Ellis Island travelers’ first glimpse of America, a symbol of hope and freedom.

What are your favorite features?

“I really love the trunks and luggage hanging in the air on a pallet like they are being unloaded from a ship at the turn of the century. Also, the little details like the luggage tags I added, the ship’s name printed on a vintage travel poster and even the print outs of records from Ellis Island when my husband’s grandfather came through Ellis Island when he was 20!”

How can I recreate this same look in my home?

“This look is definitely for someone who likes that vintage look, a history buff or anyone who wants to do a kid’s room in a fun, travel theme. It’s easy to find vintage-looking accessories at Homemakers, like the trunks.”

“Also, think about how fun it would be to research your family and find old records of them coming to America. You could do a gallery wall with old black and white pictures, framed copies of documents from Ellis Island and you may even be able to find a reproduction travel poster with the ship your ancestors traveled on! Combine these with a vintage clock and a piece of accent furniture that looks like an old trunk.”

What makes this room design stand out to you?

I like to bring a little vintage to almost every room design I do because I feel like it gives the look a little history and doesn’t feel so cookie cutter, like you could find at any big box store. It makes the room feel as if it was put together over time, not like you went to the store and just took the matchy-matchy set. People shouldn’t be afraid to mix new with old! For this display, I really wanted to tell a story.”

Bohemian Rhapsody

Get artsy with this mix and match display, featuring a rainbow of rich, vibrant hues that showcase tribal patterns. You’ll set a casually cozy look and feel with blended materials and textures, from a colorful, global rug to a contemporary, gray loveseat.

Behind the chain-link fence wall, our designer combined playful accents and wood elements to create fun, natural charm. Use the arrows below to scroll through the Bohemian Rhapsody gallery!

How can I recreate this look in my home?

“You can recreate this look by adding quirky accent pieces. I used an oversized playing jacks and a bright red X monogram to add some fun personality. Also, I love the sunburst mirror paired with the vase full of tall, leafy flowers for an earthy touch. Throw in some personal accents wherever you can and don’t be afraid to mix design styles. You can also use lots of throw pillows, blankets and layered rugs to make a laid-back environment in your home.”

What elements stand out in this design?

“This display is all about mixing patterns. I combined tribal pillows with a geometric ottoman, a floral vase and books with lattice-patterned covers. Whenever I use several different patterns in a display, I try to tie everything together with a unified color scheme. In this boho display, I repeated coral accents with earthy colors and the peacock blue that you see in the rug, lamp and accent pillows.”

What inspired this display?

“Bohemian style is becoming really popular in the design world right now. It’s so versatile because you can blend in your own personal style with Moroccan-inspired pieces and colorful, vintage accents to create a really boho-chic space. It’s all a very eclectic look.”

Recreate the look:

Farmer’s Market Fabulous

Mix and match earthenware dishes and rustic décor for a fabulous farmhouse room design. Inspired by an E-I-E-I-O theme, Brandon centered his display around a stunning, recycled pine farmhouse table paired with weathered dining chairs, reminiscent of rustic barn boards.

He created an eye-catching, “hay loft” focal point with a haystack suspended above the table, beautifully complemented by candle-lit centerpieces below. Explore our Farmer’s Market Fabulous gallery below by clicking on the scroll arrows!

What was your inspiration for this display?

“My inspiration came from the recycled pine dining table and large wood server.  The pieces reminded me of rustic barn boards.”

How can I recreate this same look in my home?

“Easy! Add corn kernels to any container to create some farm-friendly whimsy.  Burlap and vintage fabric can also give your space a rustic and unique look. Weathered accents like wood, fabric and other natural elements will give the look of rustic refinement.”

What’s a good farmhouse accent piece?

Rope is a great, natural element that is affordable and easy to work with. Tie your vintage silverware together with small ropes to create a really cool, whimsical element. Mixing colors will also create a unique look that is so easy and fun!  Don’t be afraid of trying new things, add your own touches to your design.”
