Stylist Spotlight: Designer Advice on 2018 Trends and Styles

designer advice

Welcome back to the Stylist Spotlight series! We’re fortunate enough to count some pretty talented local designers and stylists as our customers. These seasoned professionals are experts at redecorating, finding the perfect pieces for your space on a budget and always know what the newest design trends will be.

We talked to Becky Leu, the Des Moines-based designer behind Leu Interiors. Becky caught our eye on Instagram. Her gorgeous interiors make the most of natural light and are always on the forefront of modern design with plenty of classic elements to keep her styles timeless. Becky is great about tagging us (@shophomemakers) so we featured her in our latest Instastylists roundup. We just had to get her designer advice on her styling process, what inspires her and what trends she thinks will be big in 2018.

Designer Advice: A Chat with Becky Leu

First off: how did you get started in the field of interior design?

My dad is a carpenter and has a home remodeling business, so I grew up in the sawdust and just never left! I knew I’d be an interior designer by the time I was seven years old, when I learned that my aunt designed interiors for a living. I couldn’t believe such a fun activity was a job! So, I set my heart and soul on it in that moment, went to college for interior design, then worked in the industry for a while under experienced mentors before launching Leu Interiors.

Where do you draw your inspiration?

I love to browse Pinterest and Instagram. I follow all of my design role models as well as other fabulous designers who use styles other than my own. Keeping my inspiration varied helps me work with a variety of client tastes.

What trends are you excited about right now?

I love keeping things light with dark accents. White walls are definitely becoming more common again, as well as white-on-white kitchen designs.

But I think we’re also going to see non-white trim and door casings grow in popularity in the next few years. Specifically, medium to dark gray toned painted trim to contrast with those light walls. It sounds scary, and it may be a bolder move than most Midwesterners are willing to commit to, but it’s absolutely gorgeous! Don’t be surprised to see light wood floors taking over your Instagram feed, either!

What design style is most popular among your clients?

Modern farmhouse! Everyone wants a taste of Fixer Upper’s signature look.

Tell us about your own style- what do you like?

My personal style is so complex that even I struggle to put a name on it! But I like to call it “modern coastal with mid-century and industrial influences.” I like to use almost exclusively neutral colors, then layer in natural textures (woven baskets, wood tones, green plants) to enhance the serenity of the neutral palette. Finally, I add touches of black here and there to give the ultra-soothing aesthetic that I’ve created just a little bit of energy and edge.

Where do you like to find furniture for your clients?

That really depends on the client’s style and budget. A lot of times, I’ll search online before going to any brick and mortar stores or showrooms. I like to get a feel for what’s available and the prices I’m aiming for before running my errands.

The decor I select comes from all over the world, and sometimes even from local artists! When sourcing furniture locally, I almost always end up at Homemakers. Their showroom makes it extremely convenient and efficient for me to take my clients on a shopping trip. My clients can do sit tests, ask questions of the always helpful and friendly sales team and get my professional design input all in one place.

Going yet another step further, they also make purchasing easy, delivery or pickup a breeze, and I’ve never had a negative experience recommending Homemakers. I can’t say that about every one of my vendors!

Finally, what is your #1 design tip?

Less is more! I love finding pieces that don’t need tons of filler or accessories to look purposeful, intentional and beautiful.
