After a long winter, spring break is finally near! There’s no need to grumble if you aren’t jetting off to some exotic locale—haven’t you heard? Des Moines is the next big thing!
We have the scoop on the best things to do in Des Moines next week, and there’s a little something for everyone.
Spring fever can make anyone go a little wild. Burn off that energy at Climb Iowa, the largest indoor climbing facility in the state. It boasts more than 10,000 square feet of climbing, 200 routes and challenges, a yoga studio and more! Plus, they’re offering a great spring break camp for kids ages 7-13, teaching them about rock climbing while fostering teamwork and problem-solving skills.
Des Moines Art Center
The Des Moines art scene has been getting a lot of national buzz lately, and for good reason! The city is home to some seriously impressive collections, artists and resources, including the Des Moines Art Center, which is offering a ton of spring break workshops for kids ages 4-12. Each day will focus on artistic traditions from all around the world, with activities tailored to each age group. Be sure to take advantage of the free audio tours of the Art Center, as well as the Pappajohn Sculpture Park!
Des Moines Playhouse
Do you know any kids with a flair for the dramatic? Be sure to check out the Des Moines Playhouse! In addition to all the great shows this season at the Kate Goldman Children’s Theatre, the Spring Break Performance Academy is putting on a production of The Music Man, starring kids in grades 3-8. Don’t forget to check out the auditions for upcoming productions at the Playhouse—you might have some star potential under your roof!
Des Moines Social Club
The Des Moines Social Club has been dazzling us for years with their impressive variety of arts and entertainment programming, but did you know the nonprofit organization has classes for kids, too? The drop-in policy makes it easy for kids to get their feet wet with classes like Aerial and Kids’ Circus, letting them create fun memories, acquire unique skills and build positive self-esteem.
Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden
If you’re looking for a little change of scenery, the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden has you covered! From the moment you walk in the door, you’re treated to perfect temperatures, lush greenery and vibrant blossoms—doesn’t that sound nice right about now? Additionally, their Spring Break Family Workshops, geared toward little gardeners ages 5-10, provide the perfect mix of education and entertainment.
Jester Park is offering an antidote to cabin fever with their awesome spring break camps! If you know someone who raves about reptiles or is bonkers for bugs, they’ll love learning more about their favorites at the Lodge. There’s even more fun to be had at the Equestrian Center, where kids can learn outdoor survival skills and take part in a four-day horse camp!
Living History Farms
Living History Farms will take kids through time, around the world and even into the day-to-day life of a farm veterinarian with their interactive spring break camps! Kids of all ages will enjoy being able to step into someone else’s shoes, and parents will love the way Living History Farms makes learning fun. There’s even a session for the whole family to enjoy together!
Plus, we sure hope your spring break includes a visit to see us! Stop by and check out what’s new at Homemakers—and why not grab a free, freshly baked cookie while you’re here? You’ve earned it!
