[Updated for 2018]
It’s the height of summer! The weather is warm, the kids are on vacation and now it’s the Fourth of July! We love this holiday for a number of reasons. This year marks 242 years of the United States of America declaring independence and it’s a day to remember our country’s history and celebrate.
The best way to celebrate the most patriotic of holidays is with the most American pastime: a Fourth of July party. Whether it’s on the patio or in the backyard, round up family and friends and head outside to celebrate in the sun. We’ve compiled some of our favorite cocktails, food, decorations and of course, outdoor furniture for the occasion.
So get your flag, grab a drink and let’s have a Fourth of July party!

Whether you prefer a refreshing “mocktail” or are ready to dive into something a little stronger, there are plenty of options for red, white and blue drinks.
The red, white and blue piña coladas from Home Sweet Jones make for an Instagram-worthy cocktail. Strawberry puree is layered with blue curacao and topped with whipped cream for a vibrant, patriotic cocktail. We also love the red, white and blue sangria from Recipe Girl. It’s so easy to mix up sangria in big batches if you are entertaining a large group. Just add strawberries and blueberries for extra color. She even adds star-shaped pieces of pineapple for an extra patriotic flair!
For a non-alcoholic drink, we recommend the patriotic cocktail from Baking Beauty. It’s made up of layers of juice and piña colada-flavored beverage that will really shine in a mason jar or tall glass. It’s perfect for kids or anyone who doesn’t drink.

No Fourth of July party is complete without a full feast of American classics and backyard favorites. What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear Fourth of July food? Burgers? Even your burgers can be red, white and blue with this star-spangled burger recipe from Allrecipes. Don’t worry, it’s just the toppings that add the patriotic colors!
Barbeque is a staple for most backyard events. These honey-glazed ribs from Delish are marinated in whiskey for an extra kick. These ribs are slow cooked in the oven before they hit the grill so they hit all right notes of sweet, smoky and tender. P.S. We’d love an invitation to your place if you do make these for your party!
For dessert, we love Good Housekeeping’s version of a flag cake: cupcakes topped with blueberries, strawberries or coconut and arranged to look like the American flag. Cupcakes are super easy to make, easy to portion out and this is a different way to make a classic dessert.
Fourth of July Decorations
If you’re entertaining on a porch and want a little décor, we carry some patriotic art right here at Homemakers. The Ashley Denholm piece is vintage Americana at its finest and captures the spirit of your party perfectly.
We also carry a collection of rustic Americana décor. Fill your outdoor seating with soft, burlap-covered pillows in an array of red, white and blue patterns. Drape a wood block star-spangled banner across your walls and add wooden décor pieces to your entertainment space.
When evening arrives and sunlight starts to fade, light up your outside area with outdoor lighting. Red distressed lamps and rustic metal lanterns add a cozy, country element that will keep your guests comfortable as the Fourth of July celebration continues.
If DIY is more your style, Country Living has a step-by-step guide to making your own festive flag placemats from fabric and denim. These will a great addition to your table and make for an easy project you can do with kids.
There’s plenty of room for everyone to gather around the table with this farmhouse-inspired set from Ashley. The frames are rust-resistant aluminum (a must!) while the backs are resin wicker and the cushions Nuvella upholstery. All in all, a durable and stylish option!
