Clean the kitchen counters, sweep the floors, vacuum the carpet, flip your cushions, declutter all of your clothes, clean the bathroom… Does your spring cleaning checklist go on and on? Instead of overwhelming yourself with one long list, we’ve broken it down into a simplified week-long spring cleaning schedule.

DAY 1: Clean the Kitchen
DAY 2: Organize Your Clothes
DAY 3: Refresh Your Bedroom
DAY 4: Scrub the Bathrooms
DAY 5: Tidy the Living Room
DAY 6: Wipe Down Walls and Windows
DAY 7: Tidy the Garage
Where should you begin?

It doesn’t really matter where you begin as long as you do it! But, we’re starting off strong with the kitchen. The kitchen is such a big feat that when you finish it, you will feel accomplished and motivated to keep cleaning. You will see results after cleaning a single dish, proving that this whole spring cleaning thing is doable and worth it!

DAY 1: Clean the Kitchen

  • Put everything on your counters away, don’t just move them out of the way. Wipe down the whole surface.
  • Take each item out of the refrigerator, clean the shelves, and only put back what you will use.
  • Clean the inside and outside of your oven.
  • Clean the removable tray in the microwave and wipe down the walls, buttons and handles. Don’t forget about all of your other small appliances!
  • Get rid of any old, chipped silverware and dishes that go unused.
  • Do the dishes! Don’t forget to check for any loose cups and plates that may be hiding throughout your home.

While you’re at it, go ahead and wipe down the dining table and pick some flowers for a refreshing centerpiece.

DAY 2: Organize Your Clothes

  • Do your laundry.
    • Once all of your laundry is done, you will be able to see just how many clothing items you have. Do you need them all? Now is a good time to put everything in one place and go through which clothes you’ve worn recently and which you can donate.
  • Donate your unworn clothes.
    • Find a tub or a storage container for the clothes that are out-of-season. They don’t need to take up your valuable closet space!
  • Make sure all of the clothing laying around your home are hung up or put away in their drawers/shelves.
    • Does every type of clothing have a place? It’s hard to put things away if they don’t have somewhere to go. Find storage containers or a dresser that’s big enough for your wardrobe and make sure you have enough hangers in your closet.

DAY 3: Refresh Your Bedroom

Now that your closet is all organized from yesterday, take today to make your bed, organize your nightstand or rearrange your furniture if you want! Read up on our bedroom makeover how-to and become an expert on refreshing your bedroom in one day!

Bedrooms can often be forgotten. We understand prioritizing the kitchen and living room, this is where people go when they visit. But you don’t need the reminder of all of the chores you have to do when you get into bed and look at the piles of clothes, dusty nightstands and unorganized drawers.

When decluttering your closet, take everything out and only put back what you want. Instead of looking at all of your clothes, thinking, “which things don’t I want in here?” think of it as “which things DO I want in here?” This helps you consider which pieces of clothing deserve space in your home.

You may also benefit from having three big boxes out any time you’re cleaning out your home. One to fill with donations, one to fill with garbage and one to fill with things that need to be put away in other spaces throughout your home.

DAY 4: Scrub the Bathroom

What to clean in the bathroom:

  • Sink
  • Toilet (don’t forget the handle)
  • Shower curtain
  • Unclog the sink and shower drains
  • Sweep and wash the floors
  • Wipe down the mirror
  • Cabinets and drawers
    • Organize your toiletries, hair products and everything else you have in the drawers and cabinets of your bathroom. Check the expiration labels on old products and get rid of what you don’t use. Do you really need five shampoos?

DAY 5: Tidy the Living Room

  • Clean the upholstery- check the tag for cleaning and care instructions.
  • Wash throw pillows and blankets.
  • Clean the TV screen and dust electronics.
  • Turn your cushions to help them maintain their shape and comfort.
  • If you’ve been considering rearranging your furniture, now is your chance!

DAY 6: Wipe Down Walls and Windows

As we run out of days on our week-long cleaning calendar, take a deep breath and keep your eye on the prize.

  • Dust the light fixtures, ceiling fans, trim and baseboard.
  • Clean the windows.
  • Dust the blinds.
  • Wipe down all the furniture with furniture-safe wipes and dusters.
  • Vacuum and sweep the floors.
Always Clean from the Top Down

For example, dust lighting fixtures and ceiling fans, clean off counters and tables and then move to vacuuming and sweeping the floors. If you begin with the floors then dust the ceiling fans, you’re not doing yourself any favors when that dust comes falling down to the ground!

DAY 7: Tidy the Garage

  • Wipe down the garage floor.
  • Clean out the garbage cans and recycling bins.
  • Go through ALL storage cabinets and shelves.
  • Dust the ceilings and walls.
  • Clean the garage doors and the windows.

We know this isn’t part of your home, but we recommend that you take advantage of your cleaning spree and get your car squeaky clean.

  • Go through a car wash to make the outside look as good as the inside.
  • Deep clean the trunk of your car.
  • Get rid of all of the wrappers and empty water bottles on the floor.

Final Notes

Remember to stay motivated!
Be sure you find ways to keep yourself motivated throughout the week. Create a playlist of your favorite songs and artists and get to work. Listening to something while you clean like music, a podcast or an audiobook will help keep you motivated and engaged! Remind yourself that your mind will feel more at ease with a relaxing, neat environment and don’t stop cleaning until the week is over.

Remember, spring cleaning can be done at any time. Do it whenever you’re feeling the most encouraged to do it, don’t force it! Do it at the beginning of spring so you can breathe in fresh air while you take in the scent of a newly cleaned home.

Once your house is spick and span, you can have guests over for coffee or host a game night!
