How to Hang Wall Art

First, you need to know the weight of your wall art before hanging it so that you can get the proper tools to ensure it doesn’t fall. Pick the correct weight limit on the package for the nails or screws you’ll be using. To complete the task, grab the rest of the tools you need to hang the nails or screws along with a level and painter’s tape to complete the task.

The next step is determining where to hang the wall art. The center of the piece should be 60 inches off the ground, which is the average person’s line of sight. To do this, measure the distance between the top of the wall art to where the nails sits when you hang the piece. Then, divide the frame height in half. Subtract this measurement from step one (your height between the nail and top edge). Add 60 to the find the final hanging height from the floor.

So, for example, a piece of art has 1 inch between the top of the art piece and where the nail sits. The wall art is 72 inches tall, divided by two is 36 inches. 36-1 = 35. 60 + 35 = 95. 95 inches is the final hanging height from the floor for this piece.

Using painter’s tape, tape across the wall art and mark where the holes are with a pencil. Place the tape where you want to hang the piece on the wall. Use a level to straighten your tape. Using the tape holes, mark and pre-drill or hammer the holes in the wall. Anchor the screws or nails and hang your wall art.

As a rule of thumb, when hanging wall art above furniture, you should leave six to eight inches of space between the top of the furniture and bottom of the art. The width of the art should span no more than two-thirds the length of your sofa. Above a fireplace, the width of the wall art should fall between the length of the fireplace opening and the length of the mantel. When the wall art is standing alone, it should take up four-sevenths of the wall. You can measure the length and width of the wall and multiply each number by 0.571 to find where you should hang the art on a standalone wall.

Note that while you’re laying your pieces out on the paper, heavier pieces tend to sit to the bottom left while lighter pieces sit to the upper right. Mid-sized pieces are placed in between. You can also arrange the larger piece in the middle as a focal point and work your smaller pieces around it.
